Save the Whales

Upon learning about the horrific whaling practices still taking place under "scientific" parameters in Japan, this graphic was created and donated to the Save the Whales organization along with permission to use it in any way possible to increase awareness or fundraising.

Combining the silhouette of the planet's most peaceful creature with one of the most recognizable symbols of peace, this graphic creates a powerful impression with an easily understandable message.

Save the Whales was founded in 1977 by Maris Sidenstecker, then only 14 years old. The purpose of Save the Whales is to educate the public, especially children, about marine mammals and the fragile ocean environment.

This mark has already appeared within the Summer 2009 newsletter.

Milton Glaser's Iconic Poster

After two years of searching, I have finally found an original copy of Milton Glaser's Bob Dylan poster. Sure – you can buy one on ebay, but how exciting is that? This one cost a whole $20 and I can honestly say, that I know where it came from. My wife and I found it while exploring a great little antiques store in Atlanta, GA. The owner, a character herself, had bought this album brand new in the late 1960's and it had been with her ever since.

For those who don't know, Milton Glaser is a living icon of graphic design. After graduating from The Cooper Union, Glaser and two other alums, founded Push Pin Studios. Push Pin Studios, went on to define the era of graphic design through its unique use of typography and illustration. Although Glaser's poster, created in 1967, is said to be inspired by the work of Marcel Duchamp, it stands as a perfect representation of the psychedelic times and Dylan's unique counterculture message.

Luckily the shop owner had taken relatively good care of the poster, while it isn't in mint condition, the little wear marks add an element of personality to the poster. Notice how you can actually see the fold lines that came with the poster being included in the album. The frame is obviously too big and you can see that it is actually on top of some sort of Centennial Olympic poster. Check back to see how it looks once cleaned up and properly framed.

Home Town Buffet Parking Lot, Wichita, KS

Oh that’s not a two-tone paint job! That’s sparkly purple paint with a strip of upholstered ostrich skin running from front to back. Don’t worry, the interior matched.

Woodbridge Redesign

Drawing from the rich history of the Cherokee Wine Association, which was purchased by Robert Mondavi in 1979, this redesign draws conceptual inspiration from the details of the US Prohibition.

The prescription stub, which protrudes from the bottle, works to attract the customers eye while providing a history of the Woodbridge vineyard, UPC code, and government warning. This stub is perforated, just as it would have been on an authentic prescription certificate, allowing the customer to detach the stub for future reference.

Chardonnay Copy: Woodbridge Wine exists today due to the resolve of the American farmer. During the U.S. Prohibition of 1920, the only legal way of purchasing alcohol was by medical
prescription. This in turn lead to the creation of the Cherokee Wine Association, a co-op of California farmers who banded together to distribute their grapes nation wide.

In 1979, Robert Mondavi purchased the Cherokee Wine Association, renaming it Woodbridge and ensuring its survival for years to come.

Today Woodbridge Chardonnay mixes those grapes with a fresh citrus, apple, tropical fruit, and hints of orange blossom and spice.

Grrr! I'm a PC!!!

Hours upon hours are spent in front of the computer each day, why don't they have more personality? In order to liven up my wife's laptop, I started by dismantling an Incredible Hulk toy then I designed a system for mounting the arms and legs to each side. These appendages can be switched easily and the arms even lend a hand when it comes to keeping your desk organized.

Supplies:
• 1 Incredible Hulk toy
• 4 Suction cups
• 4 Strips of Velcro
• 1 X-ACTO knife
• 1 Patient and loving wife

Green Drinks Logo

As one of the many designers hoping to steer the world in a more eco-friendly direction, I recently volunteered to create a logo for the Stillwater, OK, Green Drinks. What Green Drinks is, is an after work happy hour where eco-minded people meet on a monthly basis to discuss environmental issues.

The result of this project is the combination of an olive, commonly recognized in association with alcohol related activities, and the carbon finger print that each of us leave behind. The Green Drinks copy is set in all lower case in order to appear more inviting and the two words are distinguishable through the use of varying colors.
