SCADtastic!!!

It has been quite a while since my last blogtivity, but fret not. Things are good. In January, I began an MFA program at the Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta, GA. Needless to say, it has been keeping me pretty busy.

More updates and design news to come.

Save the Whales

Upon learning about the horrific whaling practices still taking place under "scientific" parameters in Japan, this graphic was created and donated to the Save the Whales organization along with permission to use it in any way possible to increase awareness or fundraising.

Combining the silhouette of the planet's most peaceful creature with one of the most recognizable symbols of peace, this graphic creates a powerful impression with an easily understandable message.

Save the Whales was founded in 1977 by Maris Sidenstecker, then only 14 years old. The purpose of Save the Whales is to educate the public, especially children, about marine mammals and the fragile ocean environment.

This mark has already appeared within the Summer 2009 newsletter.

Agency Night at Urban Grind

One of the many events taking place within the Atlanta Creative Community is an event called Agency Night at Urban Grind. Located at 962 Marietta St., Urban Grind not only provides an intimate meeting environment, but it’s also roughly a quarter of a mile from my apartment!

Aside from combining coffee and creativity, my two main vices, Agency Night, which took place on August 25th, provided a look at some of the best interactive sites on the web today. Chris Allen of Hawthorne Visual Communication, served as the guest presenter, while the attendance included professionals from both the account and creative side of the advertising industry.

Just a few of the innovative sites discussed were:

Agency Night takes place every 4th Tuesday of the month and more information can be found by searching “Agency Nights at Urban Grind” on facebook.

Informed & Delighted

As my first venture into membership with the AIGA Atlanta Chapter, I attended the screening of the newly released documentary Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight.

After viewing this film, I was in fact, informed and delighted. Arthouse Films has done an amazing job of portraying Glaser as this living icon that he truly is. What a coincidence that this screening would take place only weeks after my wife and I found our very own copy of Glaser's famous Bob Dylan poster.

I highly recommend this movie. Milton Glaser has been so instrumental in the way in which we communicate with the world of today, even non-designers would benefit from this experience.

Milton Glaser's Iconic Poster

After two years of searching, I have finally found an original copy of Milton Glaser's Bob Dylan poster. Sure – you can buy one on ebay, but how exciting is that? This one cost a whole $20 and I can honestly say, that I know where it came from. My wife and I found it while exploring a great little antiques store in Atlanta, GA. The owner, a character herself, had bought this album brand new in the late 1960's and it had been with her ever since.

For those who don't know, Milton Glaser is a living icon of graphic design. After graduating from The Cooper Union, Glaser and two other alums, founded Push Pin Studios. Push Pin Studios, went on to define the era of graphic design through its unique use of typography and illustration. Although Glaser's poster, created in 1967, is said to be inspired by the work of Marcel Duchamp, it stands as a perfect representation of the psychedelic times and Dylan's unique counterculture message.

Luckily the shop owner had taken relatively good care of the poster, while it isn't in mint condition, the little wear marks add an element of personality to the poster. Notice how you can actually see the fold lines that came with the poster being included in the album. The frame is obviously too big and you can see that it is actually on top of some sort of Centennial Olympic poster. Check back to see how it looks once cleaned up and properly framed.

Home Town Buffet Parking Lot, Wichita, KS

Oh that’s not a two-tone paint job! That’s sparkly purple paint with a strip of upholstered ostrich skin running from front to back. Don’t worry, the interior matched.

Up Close With Barkley

Back in December of 2008, I attended an AIGA event hosted by the Kansas City Chapter. This particular event was named “Up Close With Barkley” and gave members of the creative community the opportunity peek inside the nationally recognized advertising agency currently housed in the old TWA building of downtown Kansas City, MO.

One of my best AIGA experiences to date. The Kansas City Chapter is definitely on the right track and they are doing some amazing things. I happened across one of the pictures from the event while checking in with their site a few days ago. I’m wearing the green sweater and carrying the brown bag.
